No Sex but Violence with @TrevannRogers #LGBT #Fantasy

I’m a writer of high heat LGBT Urban Fantasy, so you’d think I wouldn’t have a problem with either sex or violence. And I don’t—not exactly. I take issue with how the American culture accepts violence across genres and over a wide spectrum while sex is still taboo in comparison.

Our acceptance of violence goes back a long way. I was at the store yesterday and noticed this structure in the background, reminding me of one of the most vicious (albeit often hilarious) cartoons, Road Runner. I cannot think of one violent action that evil bird didn’t commit against the clearly deranged coyote.

During the same era, sex was so far “off the page” we were duped into not thinking about it. Lucy and Ricky, of the iconic series “I Love Lucy” didn’t even share a bed, leaving the audience to conclude that Little Ricky was conceived through something like Immaculate Conception.

Today’s entertainment mediums tolerate more sex and violence, but the progression has not been balanced. Modern horror “slasher” movies routinely show in detail stabbing, amputations, eye gouging and flayed skin—but an erect penis in an R-rated movie is still out of bounds.

In television, gore has become commonplace for comedic affect. The Sharknado series is infamous not only for it’s ridiculous (and ridiculously funny) concept,  but tell me, who doesn’t watch SyFy movies for the prime-time money shot—the blood  spurt? And just yesterday I flipped through the channels to arrive at the moment on Bones where the dead woman lay eviscerated on the table, with the absurd decency of towels covering her breasts and vagina.

This peculiar phenomenon has touched my own writing life. Although my book, HOUSE OF THE RISING SON has sexual content and violent scenes, my publisher warned me not to send out any excerpts with sex above a “mild PG rating”.  There was no restriction regarding my fight scenes.

Not that I minded.  My incubus Cheyenne would rather make love, anyway.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SON

Cheyenne is a half-human incubus whose star is on the rise in the Unakite City rock scene. His father, the leader of the supernatural races, would prefer he keep a "low profile", but screw that. Cheyenne has as much music in his veins as royal incubi blood.
Alexander's future is all set--finish law school, join the family firm, and marry someone who'd be good for business. Not that he has a say in any of it. He's barely met the woman his father expects him to marry.
As Cheyenne's musical career takes off, his carefully constructed life begins to unravel,   exacerbated by an ex-lover who can't let go, a crotchety barkeeper with a dirty mind and a pure heart, a drag queen who moonlights as a nanny, and Alexander--who's not sure if he's falling for the incubus or the rocker.
Cheyenne denies who he is, while Alexander hides what he wants. Together, they learn that getting what you truly want depends on being who you truly are.

Warning: Contains hot were-tiger sex, a Thanksgiving celebration that makes the Inquisition look like a tea party, and an incubus who'll rock your world.

EXCERPT

Alexander stared at Cheyenne. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“I’m about to tell you some stuff that you are not going to believe. But you can’t tell
anyone.”

“Whatever. It can’t be any weirder than seeing a monster movie play out in an alley.”
He dropped onto the sofa next to Alexander. “Like I said, those were Weres. My father’s henchmen. Stupid, but so far loyal enforcers. And usually deadly.” He studied Alexander’s face. “You really haven’t noticed that I’m different from other people?”
Alexander shrugged. “I don’t care that you’re a...that you like guys. But what’s that got to—”
“I’m not gay. Not exactly. I’m an incubus.” He looked for some indication of recognition in Alexander’s eyes. “A supernatural being?” Not a shred of comprehension. “A sexual demon?”
“A demon?” Alexander started to get up. “You are out of your mind.”
Cheyenne’s hand on his arm stilled him. “Not the ‘burn in the ever-after for all eternity, hellfire and brimstone, steal your soul’ sort of demon. A sexual demon. The crowd at Eddies? I feed on that energy. And you know how Prudence is sort of turned on by me but really, and I mean really, hates me? That feeds me too, all that emotion—”
“Prudence doesn’t—”
“Not the point. And let’s not forget the Weres. Hello? Paranormal. As in not normal— for humans.”
Alexander stood and crossed the sunken living room to the kitchen. He opened another Corona and made his way back to the couch. “Is that why you aren’t hurt?”
“Yeah. The thing is, my father is, like, the head guy. He sent those assholes after me. He doesn’t want me to play music or do anything else he thinks will draw attention to us.”
“Us?”
“The Incubi Nation. We’ve been here, living in your world, for centuries. Us, the Weres, the mages, and a lot of other races. I’ll explain all that later. Your world is ours too. And my father thinks if humans found out about us, it would be the beginning of the end. Of the incubi for sure, but maybe everything.”
“Maybe your father’s right. My head is about to explode.”

Alison Mello is a wife and stay at home mom to a wonderful little boy. She lives with her amazing family in Massachusetts.
She loves playing soccer, basketball and football with her son. After having her son, Alison started reading again and fell in love with Contemporary Romance.
Reading made her happy and gave her something to do when she had downtime.
As she started to read more, she started to noticed things she really enjoyed in a book and things she didn’t. She began to have ideas for writing one of her own. One day she literally woke up and started writing. She realized that if there was ever a time for her to write, it was now. She had a part time job to give her something to do.
The hours at work were slow and she was bored with what she was doing, so while her son was off enjoying his friends over summer vacation she got started.
Alison finished the first book in two weeks and decided that she really enjoyed writing, so she kept going. She already had ideas in mind for books two and three, so she kept writing.
That is how the Learning to Love Series was born. Somewhere along the line, one of my Beta readers convinced me that Michael, a character from Finding Love, needed his own story.
That is when Alison added the fourth and final book. Alison hopes you enjoy her books as much as she enjoyed writing them.

R Excerpt from “Whatever It Takes” by S.K. Fero
“I’ve gotten on your last nerve, haven’t I?” His gut tightened as he waited for Alan’s response. His promise to do whatever it took to make this work played over in his mind. He meant it, too. Even if he would be leaping far outside of his comfort zone.
“I can’t deny that.” Alan walked over and stood in front of Jake, looking down, frustration in his dark brown gaze. “I don’t want to—”
“Give up on us,” Jake interrupted. He glanced down at his bare feet and then up again. “Neither do I.”
When Alan remained quiet, studying him, Jake grabbed onto his courage and said, “What if…” He hesitated. Could he actually say the words? Actually take this step?
“If?” Alan prodded.
Even standing there stiffly, frowning with impatience, Jake wanted to jump his bones…or have him jump his bones. Without a shirt on, Alan’s muscled chest drew his attention. His friend owned a high-end residential construction company. But Alan spent almost as much time hauling heavy lumber around, nailing framing together, and even roofing as anyone on his construction teams. All of that physical effort showed, including scars from this or that accident. He longed to get horizontal with the man again, to run his calloused hands all over him. But they had to deal with this problem first.
Jake held Alan’s gaze and refused to back down from his decision. “What you mentioned that one time. That Dom/sub matter.” He blew out a breath. “I’m willing to talk about it.”
One of Alan’s dark eyebrows shot up. “We’re both pretty dominant men.” Still, it was obvious the idea appealed to him.
“True, but…” Jake hesitated, quickly mulling it over again. “But I think I can handle the lesser role, sometimes. Particularly if it will make you see how bad I want to keep whatever this is that we have.”
Alan crossed his arms, squared his shoulders. “If we try it—and I’m not agreeing to that without some thought, I will clearly be in charge. You would do as I told you. You would not try to negotiate with me.”
Oh shit. This sounded a hell of a lot more serious than he’d thought. Once more he wondered if he could do this, give over control to another man. But as he looked at the darkly handsome man watching him with intense eyes, he also saw the strength of Alan’s feelings for him. There’d never been anything soft and easy about the way they made love to each other. Their kisses alone had the power to leave him panting, aching. Yet he knew to his soul that this man would never really hurt him. Maybe cause him a little pain, at least he assumed there might be some of that in bdsm play. He could deal with that. He could not deal with losing Alan without giving it his best shot.

Story Excerpt:
Her eyes opening shocked him. Lucian stood rapidly and darted to the doorway, hoping his speed had stopped her from seeing him. He sped into the living area and headed to the front door. Amy’s voice ground him to a halt before he reached it.
“What the hell are you doing inside my apartment?” she asked angrily.
Lucian turned. How had she gotten to the entrance hall so quickly? His speed was unmatched, and there was no way she could have gotten out of bed and walked there as quickly as he’d moved. Lucian saw the anger in her expression. He winced.
“I’m sorry. I….”
“Don’t. Just don’t. First you try and kill me. Then you all but drag me from the club. What am I? Some kind of obsession for you? What next? Strangle me while I sleep. Get out!”
“Amy. Please. I don’t want to hurt you. I came here to help protect you,” Lucian said, hoping more than anything their confrontation hadn’t woken her friend.
“You broke into my apartment. For all I know, you could be some kind of serial killer. Get out before I call the police,” Amy demanded.
“Amy. Please don’t be afraid… I,” Lucian said, taking a step closer to her.
Amy step backward. Her gazed bored straight into him, and if it were laced with poison, he’d be dead where he stood.
“Afraid. I’m not afraid. I’m damn well livid. How do you know my name? Why are you following me?” Amy asked.
Lucian glanced down at her hands. They were clasped tight enough for her knuckles to glare white. It was another visual sign of her anger toward him. “My name is Lucian Dark. I didn’t mean to break in, but you need to come with me. The males who were at the club want to take you. I want to help keep you safe,” he explained quickly.
He watched Amy’s reaction closely. Her defiant stance was unmoving, and she was good at guarding her emotions.
“I don’t care who you are. You broke into my apartment, so ‘didn’t mean to’ isn’t quite the truth, is it? I want you to leave me alone. I’m not going anywhere with you, and I don’t need anyone to keep me safe. I asked you to leave,” Amy said, more calmly.
“You don’t understand…,” Lucian began.
“No. You don’t understand. I don’t need anyone’s help. You appeared to deal with those males effectively. Go do whatever it is you do and leave me the hell alone,” she said.
Lucian watched the female take a step backward. He frowned. “You know who I am, don’t you?”
“I know what you are. For all I know you could be working with them. You best leave,” Amy said.
“I’m not going anywhere. I have nothing to do with those males. Do you know who they are?” Lucian asked, taking a step forward.
“No.”
Lucian sensed Amy knew exactly who the males at the club were. She had no intention of revealing anything. She was still obviously angry, but at least her tone had calmed. Maybe she would allow him to speak to her. Maybe, just maybe, he had a chance at convincing her to go with them.

Adult Excerpt 18+ only
Before he could answer, Lucian’s control broke. He reached forward and pressed his body against her. Her skin felt smooth and delicious against his, and his lust for her soared through him. Her full, rounded breasts contained in her swimsuit pressed against his chest muscles, and it caused a frenzy of desire to run through his veins. He took her head in one of his hands and pressed his lips against hers. If it wasn’t for the water cooling his skin, he would have caught fire at the sensation of her mouth opening up to him. She didn’t falter, but took him willingly. Her sweet taste was delicious as he explored her mouth with his tongue, and her reaction to him was just as passionate. He took every desire of his mate straight to his heart.
Her arms around his body pulled him closer. He felt her legs wrap around his waist, and his dick throbbed to be inside her. He knew she’d be able to feel his hard shaft against her clit, and he circled his hips, losing himself in the growing desire to shed her of the suit that was stopping him from feeling more of her body. She was responding to his need as desperately as he was, and he deepened the kiss, groaning deeply in his chest. She was possessing every emotion inside him. With her, he could feel again, and it was both scary and exhilarating. He couldn’t stop even if the whole place caught fire. She felt right in his arms, and he knew he’d never be able to let her go. He just hoped she felt the same way.

Q&A:
Q. Please tell us about your latest book.

A. This book delves into the life of Lucian, one of the lords of the Mist. He meets Amy Jackson and becomes obsessed with who she really is. She’d hiding something, and doesn’t want to put others at risk but he knows he has to do everything he can to protect her. Will he reject her when he finds out the truth?
This book was so much fun to write. Amy’s character is defiant and strong willed, and it was so enjoyable writing the scenes of her and Lucian’s confrontations. They are battling between desire for each other, and at the same time keeping themselves from getting involved. I found balancing their love for each other, and their desire to deny their future, a challenge.

Q. How do we find out about you and your books?

A. All my books can be found on my website      - abbiecarlisle.weebly.com
                                                       Bookstrand         - www.bookstrand.com/abbie-carlisle
                                                           Goodreads      - http://www.goodreads.com/Abbie_Carlisle

Q. Why did you decide to write romance novels?

A. I’ve read paranormal romance books for years after being introduced to them by my twin sister. I especially love Laurann Dohner books and decided one day to put my ideas down on paper. Once I started to write, it was like a buzz that I couldn’t stop until I had finished my first book. Now I’ve just submitted my 6th and my love of writing is still as strong.

Q. How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

A. Writing paranormal genre allows you to put in some personal life experiences but it can also allow you the freedom to be creative. I love being able to create personalities for characters that are fun and interesting but also dark and mysterious.

Q. Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

A. I don’t have a schedule as such, I just write whenever I get the chance. In between family and work, I usually get to write at the end of the day when it’s peaceful.

Q. What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries?

A. I love to relax by reading my Kindle where I have lots of my favourite author’s books. I usually start reading and keep going until I’ve read the whole series.

Q. Do you feel humour is important in women's fiction and why?

A. I feel it’s important for readers to relate to the characters in the book and humour is a good way to create enjoyment. If a character is cheeky or sarcastic, in a nice way, what better way to engage a reader and make them want to know more about the characters.

Q. What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels, do you find them difficult to write?
A. I don’t find them too difficult to write. Sometimes I need to edit to ensure I don’t make them too long or repetitive. I always try to make them different so the readers are not reading the same words or sentences over and over. I make them emotionally descriptive to help the readers sense the passion.

Q. What kind of research do you do?

A. I research a lot on settings and characters visually to help my writing to be more descriptive. I find this helps the readers to really visualize as they read.

Q. Do you have a favorite author? Favorite book?

A. My favourite author is Laurann Dohner and my favourite book is Braun. She is an amazing author and is able to create emotionally intense scenes of possession but can also make you laugh. Her characters are interesting and powerful which makes her stories fun to read.
Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer?

A. I have always enjoyed reading but never thought of myself as a writer. Now I have written 6 novels, I can never imagine not wanting to ever stop writing now.

Q. How many books have you written, and how many of those have been published?

A. I’ve written 6 books and they have been published straight away. I’m hoping the following books in the series will also have the privilege of being published.

Q. Have you experienced writer's block---> If so, how did you work through it?

A. I have hit writer’s block in the middle of the books. I left them for a few days and returned to them. I re-read a few chapters and find things that didn’t sound right and this helped me move forward with the stories.

Q. What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?

A. Completing a book full of fun, love and intense desire is exciting. Being able to give readers enjoyment from reading a great story is immensely rewarding.

Q. Are there any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

A. Don’t ever give up. Sometimes it’s difficult but believe in the ideas you have. If you love it, others will too. Join readers groups, it’s a great way to interact and get ideas and support.

R Excerpt from “To Love, Honor, Obey, and Trust”
The whole day had been a waste of time. Abby hadn’t accomplished much of anything. She sure hadn’t finished the project that was now past due. Thanks to her husband. From his peculiar announcement before he’d left the house, to the shocking texts, to the outrageous demand he’d made over the phone, he’d made it impossible for her to think about what she needed to do in the office.
She glanced at the monitor and heaved a sigh of defeat. It was time to admit that all she’d done was almost screw up the design plans for the website she’d already spent far too much time building. Before she made it even worse, she closed the file.
Her entire body felt sensitized. She’d spent most of the day sitting at her desk very aware that her bottom was bare beneath her skirt. She didn’t have to do as Todd had told her to; he wouldn’t have known if she’d lied to him. But she’d obeyed him because…well, just because.
The experience—all of it—was so outlandish. Having the man she’d known for so long suddenly show another side, a compelling dominant one, had surprised her. Excited her. Talking about spanking her, burning her bottom. Telling her to remove her panties while here in her office. Thinking about all of that, all day long…It sure had gotten her out of the grumpy mood she’d been in. He’d been right about that.
Heart racing with thoughts of the evening ahead, she shut down the computer and hap-hazardly straightened her desk. She grabbed her purse and headed out of the office, unconcerned about leaving early.
“I may be in late tomorrow,” she told the receptionist, who gave her a puzzled look. She didn’t owe the woman an explanation, and she didn’t know what to say anyway. But she’d never been spanked before and she didn’t know what to expect, how she would feel. She also didn’t want to think about that too much.
The drive home was odd, too. Probably she shouldn’t have been that aware of not wearing panties, but she was. It seemed like the air blew up from the vent between her legs even more than usual, feeling strange, naughty. Like her. She’d been naughty, behaved badly enough that her husband was going to punish her.

Professional Bio-Short: Starla has published 86 romance titles, including contemporary, historical Western, Regency, Medieval, paranormal, sci-fi, and GLBT. Her stories always lean toward the sensual side of romance, some even erotic. Whatever happens within her stories, the characters face difficulties between the outside world and each other. They always manage to find love and respect for one another.
